U.S., Bahamas forces nab 58 in drug probe MIAMI (AP) Hundreds of roving officers set up "pickets" around 30 islands in the Bahamas, arresting 58 people and seizing more than $100 million worth of cocaine and marijuana in 17 days, officials said Friday. The crackdown by patrols involved about 775 law-enforcement personnel from the United States and the Bahamas, said Coast Guard Adm. Rick Cueroni, coordinator of the federal anti-drug South Florida Task Force.

The project, dubbed Operation Blue Lightning, ended Thursday and netted 5,500 pounds of cocaine and 33,872 pounds of marijuana, Cueroni said. By comparison, an average of about a ton of cocaine was seized in the entire United States during each of the first three months of 1985, Cueroni said. In addition, 600 would-be Haitian refugees were intercepted before they could reach U.S. shores, he said. Haitians frequently make their way to the Bahamas before finding transportation to the United States, authorities said.

Endangered panther hit, killed by car NAPLES (AP) The third endangered Florida panther to be killed in Collier County since November was accidentally struck by a Broward Sheriff's captain returning home in a department car, officials said Friday.
