What is the 13 rule on Discord? ›

Age requirements and responsibility of parents and legal guardians. By accessing our services, you confirm that you're at least 13 years old and meet the minimum age required by the laws in your country.

Do not send unsolicited bulk messages (or spam) to others. Also, do not facilitate this activity, such as by selling spambots, server “raid” tools, account-creation tools, token generators, CAPTCHA-solving services, or other spam tools.

Below the Discord logo, you will see a list of all servers you are currently in. Clicking a server in this list will take you to your last viewed channel in said server.

Users who break the rules will receive a system direct message (DM) from Discord letting them know they received a violation. Users will receive a DM each time they break our rules. Within the DM, users will see a card that summarizes the violation. Pressing on the card will reveal further details for the violation.

The COPPA rule says a child can be under 13, as long as they have parental permission and supervision, with the guardian having full management of the account.

You must be age 18 or older to participate in adult content on Discord. You must apply the age-restricted label to any channels or servers if they contain adult content or other restricted content such as violent content.

Content that is explicitly pornographic, depicting sexual acts, or depicting nudity is prohibited anywhere on a partnered server. Content that includes discussions of nudity, sexuality and violence is considered NSFW content and should occur only in the properly marked channels.

As part of our goal to promote acceptance and inclusivity, we prohibit hate speech, discrimination, and prejudice. We don't allow hateful conduct or the use of hate speech while on Discord. This includes the use of hate symbols and the denial of historical mass atrocities.

We provide emergency disclosure responses only when enough information is provided for Discord to, in good faith, believe that the exigent situation requires disclosure of user information, as outlined in 18 U.S.C. § 2702. We do not disclose information for emergency requests unless they are from law enforcement.

The platform allows users to create or join thematic communities called servers, and as of April 2024, the Midjourney server was the most popular community on Discord, with over 19.9 million members.

Discord's ownership structure is simple. It is an independent company mainly owned by its co-founders, Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy. While building the product, they conducted some funding rounds, so there are some other investors within the company as well, but they hold a tiny percentage of the company.

Common Sense Media also recommends that Discord users be at least 13 due to its open chat. Because it's all user-generated, there's the potential for plenty of inappropriate content, like swearing and graphic language and images (though it's entirely possible to belong to a group that forbids these).

User may have to provide valid ID, and discord must have trusted staff dedicated to handling these processes. Users may have to provide a college ID card or driver's license. Users may have to answer a set of questions to prove their age or ID. Users may have to provide links to social media to help prove their age.

Since discord collects your data (in case you didn't know, all the images you've ever seen in the past 30 days is located in a folder on your computer, among other things) that means they can't have users under the age of 13.
